COBOL examine

Provides examples of the COBOL examine verb / statement.

The COBOL EXAMINE statement is an extension to the ANSI COBOL standard. It has been replaced by the COBOL INSPECT statement. The COBOL EXAMINE statement has been removed from later versions of COBOL. It is advisable that you use the COBOL INSPECT statement for coding new programs. The COBOL EXAMINE statement replaces or counts the number of occurrences of a given character in a data item.

OS/VS COBOL accepted the COBOL EXAMINE statement; Enterprise COBOL does not. When upgrading to Enterprise COBOL, you must either remove or alter the COBOL EXAMINE statement.
